Texas A&M fans were abuzz last night thanks to the late-game heroism of former Aggie baseball player Braden Montgomery in his first-ever major league game. Montgomery got a base hit in his first plate appearance in the majors, and he capped off his debut with a fairytale ending, knocking in a two-run homer to vanquish the league-leading Atlanta Braves in extra innings.
You really could not script it better. Not only was it the first time that Montgomery had played a major league game, it was against the best team in the league—and to top things off, thanks to the White Sox broadcast doing a throwback night, they had the legendary Bob Costas on the call for B-Mont's big moment.

All of those factors conspired to make this an extremely viral moment that had sports lovers everywhere talking. Not only that, though, but it also put Montgomery in some extremely elite company thanks to what he just pulled off.
Braden Montgomery's walk-off extra innings homer in MLB debut puts him in rare air
There have been only five players ever to hit a walk-off homer in their major league debut, and Montgomery is one of them. That alone is enough to make note of: Braden has joined an elite list by just pulling this off.
But when you add in the factor that this was a game that was in extra innings, it becomes even more select. There's only been one other player in the last fifty years to do that— and his name is Miguel Cabrera.
Braden Montgomery is just the second hitter in the last 50 years to hit a walk-off home run in extra innings on their MLB debut.

The other? Miguel Cabrera. pic.twitter.com/xh72LCH4TQ
Mix in the fact that this was against the Braves, who are the best team in the league, and you have a potent case to say that this was the most dramatic and exciting moment we've ever seen in a major leaguer debut. That sounds big at first, but it's hard to deny when you consider all of the relevant factors.
Montgomery's early success for the White Sox shouldn't surprise Texas A&M fans in the slightest, either. His one year in the maroon and white was a major success, despite it ending in a tragic injury that may have ended up costing the Aggies a College World Series win.
This is not only a guy who can hit the ball with the best of them, but as White Sox fans have begun to find out, he's a guy who is a huge value add to the team's culture. As this moment went viral last night, several stories about Montgomery being the guy who cleans up the dugout after every game— even though he's part of the team!— were beginning to spread as well.
Your first game in the Majors and you hit a walk off HR against the best team in the league with your family in the crowd and Bob Costas on the call.

You can’t even dream that!
Montgomery's career trajectory is pointed directly at a massive breakout down the stretch of this MLB season and into next year, so Aggie fans will no doubt be watching closely with a great level of excitement. The beaten-down White Sox fanbase needs a hero to cheer for, and the former Aggie baseball player may have just stepped right into those shoes with his escapades in last night's game.
