It was a long 60 seconds that Ole Miss had to endure against the mighty Texas A&M Aggies press defense.
It was that same press defense that led to a remarkable game-winning shot by Manny Obaseki.
The Aggies have shown they are gritty, and will fight to the end until the final buzzer sounds, but Williams was adamant by saying that it simply doesn't need to come to that.
Williams says Aggies cannot be just a one-half team
Sometimes, it's been the great ones to be a second half team and win a championship. Look at the Virginia Cavaliers back in 2019, they would have to comeback in most of their postseason games.
Williams said it doesn't need to come to that, and instead just play a full consistent 40 minutes of Aggie basketball.
"We can do better, and I'm not speaking to the results. I'm talking about these two questions. It sounds good if you're a second half, well, let's be a whole game team. "Buzz Williams
This was prescient, given how things completely dissolved in the second half against Texas. Though this inconsistency benefitted the Aggies in one game, it dearly cost them in the next.
Fixing this issue would also be effective because of how the Aggies fare as their identity. The wear and tear on their bodies might be too much to overcome once they get to March. Being a one-half team against these great SEC teams too many times may force some of Aggies into the medical facility before they reach the first round of the tournament.
Hopefully, that doesn't happen, but Williams' point is 100 percent correct. Just being able to have balance in one half to make it the more game more manageable helps with the wear and tear on the Aggies' bodies. The Aggies aren't going to be able to pull off come-from-behind full court presses all the time, and Williams knows that very well as he stated.
