Clayton Freshcorn was the hero for Texas A&M baseball innumerable times this past season, working as the team’s top closer and winning several huge games. Though the Aggies eventually lost, his heroic performance in his first-ever start in the regionals should not quickly be forgotten, and it shows just how talented he is no matter where you need him.
Though the Aggies are going to experience a lot of turnover between the end of this last season and the beginning of the next one, Texas A&M fans still have a lot of reason to be hopeful— and Freshcorn is now among that list. Today, despite being selected in the late rounds of the MLB Draft, Freshcorn confirmed that he will be returning to Texas A&M for the upcoming season.
Clayton Freshcorn met face-to-face yesterday with Barry Enright and today with Michael Earley.

His return to College Station serves as the biggest offseason acquisition for next year’s Texas A&M baseball team.

Freshcorn joins last year’s breakout star at starter, Aiden Sims, as two top arms on the Texas A&M staff— an area where they really struggled last year. With these two leading up the group, though, this should hopefully not be as big of an issue in 2027– and it may, in fact, become a strength.
Clayton Freshcorn’s return to Texas A&M baseball for 2027 is exactly what Aggies needed
Freshcorn was named an all-American last season thanks to his prowess as a reliever, but that aforementioned game where he started against the Trojans in the regional shows that he has more in his bag than just a few innings. Getting him in the weekend rotation seems to be a foregone conclusion, and he will no doubt blossom in that role.
Having as many quality arms as possible is massive for the Aggies— we saw what happened when Josh Stewart went down this past year, robbing him of his final year in College Station— so the way this affects the depth chart (especially with how Michael Earley has been working the portal) is also notable here. This will slide some of the other pitchers down in the pecking order, but that gives Earley and company a lot of opportunity to properly utilize everyone instead of moving people out of roles they are comfortable with.
The Barry Enright effect is another piece that should be discussed here. The Aggies’ new pitching coach should help Freshcorn take his game to even another level after he is able to coach him up this offseason— every Aggie fan knows that Jason Kelly was not exactly a big time help to the staff this past two years, so getting some more aid in that area will lift everyone in that room.
In the SEC, you can’t get by with just one quality starter at pitcher— we saw that firsthand with the Aggies this past season, and it was painful far too much of the time. Texas A&M has two really solid options now with Sims and Freshcorn, and a bevy of players to pick from who have arrived through the portal. This is a big win for the Aggies, no doubt— Earley’s squad continues to look better and better for the future.
