Conner Weigman: 'I wasn't able to reach my full potential' with Texas A&M football

The former Texas A&M football quarterback, headed for the transfer portal, had some comments on his way out the door.

Conner Weigman: 'My best football is ahead of me' after declaring intentions to depart Texas A&M football via the portal; Should Aggie fans feel slighted?

The last, most notable vestige of the Jimbo Fisher era for Texas A&M football is headed out the door. Five-star quarterback Conner Weigman, who many saw as a potential savior for the program due to his astronomically high ceiling, has declared his intention to enter the transfer portal.

This comes as no surprise, as Weigman—though he flashed that ceiling that has so many Aggie fans starry-eyed with hope—was supplanted down the back half of the season after some inconsistent play. Marcel Reed looks to be the guy going forward for Texas A&M football, so Weigman is heading out on his own to see where he can make an impact.

Even though he never quite broke into the top tier of quarterbacks nationally, some of the performances he put on were enough to get him on some national radars. Accordingly, given all he represented to this program, ESPN reached out for a quote when he announced his intention to depart.

He spoke briefly, giving the following quote.

The tweet that sent out the quote certainly gives the impression that this is a slight to Texas A&M football.

But is it?

I'm not sure any Aggie fan would disagree with what Conner said there, on the merits. We saw him have some insanely high-level moments, but also some pretty low ones. If his potential is the former, and he wasn't able to stay there consistently, then it is literally true that he wasn't able to reach his full potential with the Aggies.

As far as his best football being ahead of him, I certainly hope that's true. That sounds like a guy who's betting on himself and looking confidently to the future, which is what you hope to see out of a quarterback.

I'm not sure this was aimed at the Aggies in any negative way. Conner's stuck through a lot of ups and downs in Aggieland, and moving on is clearly the right decision at this point.
