Senior LB and team captain Daymion Sanford is at SEC Media Days along with head coach Mike Elko, QB Marcel Reed, and S Marcus Ratcliffe, representing the Aggies at the unofficial kickoff to football season. With just over a month left to go before the season, fans are hearing from representatives of every program in the conference, with Sanford as one of four coming from College Station.
With the senior LB and first-time team captain coming to Tampa after his ugly spring game injury, you had to know that there would be plenty of questions about what took place in those moments and afterwards. Things seemed really bad coming out of the gate with that injury, but every eventuality since that point has been a positive one for the Aggies.
Sanford was obviously ready for those questions, and he gave a lot more of an answer than we've gotten in the past. Not only did he confirm the optimism that has been in the air surrounding his true status, he even gave (something of) a timetable for a prospective return.

Here's what Sanford had to say about his injury and recovery when asked:
"It wasn't as bad as I thought it was. The biggest question was, was I going to be out for the season? It wasn't as bad. I had a little fibula injury. I've been working on it every day... trying to get back as soon as I can."Daymion Sanford
It was suspected that Sanford's injury was to his fibula (calf bone), but there was never any official word on where exactly it occurred. Sanford did not specify exactly what kind of injury it was to his fibula— a full break, a smaller fracture, or anything else— but the recovery for this kind of injury is more straightforward than if it had been to soft tissue.

Sanford's confidence in the Aggie medical staff is well-founded, of course, as they have helped many Texas A&M players return sooner than anticipated— after Rueben Owens got hurt in fall camp two years ago and most assumed he'd be out for the season, the Aggie training staff got him ready in time for the final game.
As for a timeline, that's been hard to come by in discussions surrounding the Aggie captain, but the confidence he has is unquestioned. When he was asked when he would be back, Sanford gave a succinct but perfect answer:

While I'm sure there are some fans who wish that he was giving a game-level prediction, the clarity of his determination and his level of optimism have to be encouraging for every Aggie. This is the consummate team player that we're talking about here, clearly, and he will be doing everything he can to help the team— and the biggest way he can do that is get his recovery knocked out with intensity and expediency. It's clear he's intent on doing that and getting back in the lineup as soon as possible, so Aggie fans can rest easy.
