Mike Elko does not often speak very transparently on injuries, so when Daymion Sanford went down with what looked to be a pretty nasty one at the end of the first half of the Aggie spring game, A&M fans knew that they wouldn't get a lot out of Elko about it in the presser.
Since that point, though, there have been some positive signs for Sanford. There have been some projections that he could return during the 2026 season, allaying fears that he would be out for the entire year, which was the point of view many had after what we saw in Kyle Field last month.
Speaking to a crowd in Dallas last night, Mike Elko took a much more positive tone than Aggie fans are used to hearing out of him regarding injuries. Elko is not one to sugarcoat things, even if he is generally pretty opaque about these things, so this was a welcome development for Aggie fans.
Mike Elko gives fans a reason for hope in recent Daymion Sanford injury update
Here's what Elko had to say about Sanford's status when he was speaking to the Dallas Aggie club last night:
Mike Elko: "I am not going to get into the Daymion Sanford injury. I know that's the elephant in the room, a little bit. We are confident we are going to get Daymion back and play really good football this fall."

"We're hopeful that the recovery and the rehab goes the way that…
He starts off by saying he's not going to get into it, but the words "we are confident we are going to get Daymion back and play really good football this fall" are nothing if not hopeful. Of course, that could mean game one, game six, or game twelve, but I don't think we would be hearing this kind of rhetoric out of Elko if Sanford's return was going to be that far down the road.
He went on, though, saying that they were "hopeful" that his rehab could go well, leading to Sanford having "a really strong year" for the Aggies. Again, he's not revealing anything in particular, but this does not sound like the word choice of someone who is very worried that Sanford will be missing an extremely extended period of time.
Texas A&M needs Daymion Sanford back from injury as soon as possible
Getting Daymion Sanford back on the field early for the Aggies would be absolutely massive. The linebacker position right now is not all that deep, with Ray Coney and Noah Mikhail being the main contributors with Sanford out. After losing both Taurean York and Scooby Williams to the draft, Sanford was predicted to be the biggest factor at the position before his injury.
There's a lot of optimism about Mikhail, but he's still pretty young and pretty raw. Coney has a heck of a lot of experience, but the jump up from Tulsa to the SEC is not an insignificant one. Sanford was looked at as the steadying force of this group, so to go without him is far from ideal.
This latest update from Elko, however, has Aggie fans feeling a lot more optimistic about his possible return. Elko has quite a few more coach's nights to attend around the state, so we'll see if anything else trickles out about this topic, as it will no doubt still be top of mind for every Aggie fan until the season kicks off on September 5.
