Daymion Sanford injury update is massive gut punch, but not all hope is lost

This seemed inevitable in some ways, but there's still some hope left for Texas A&M football fans.

Texas A&M fans have been waiting on pins and needles for Daymion Sanford news since the team captain and senior linebacker went down in the spring game near the end of the first half. Things did not look good for Sanford at that point, as the cart was called out and the first half was immediately called.

There's been discussion back and forth on internet forums and social media about what may have happened to Sanford since that point, but we finally have our first definitive word about an update on his injury. Matt Zenitz of CBS Sports reports that Sanford has undergone surgery for a lower body injury and is currently expected to "likely miss at least part of the season."

This is about what Texas A&M fans have expected, but it's still a gut punch to hear that it has been confirmed by this point. However, all is not lost for the Aggies.

Texas A&M star linebacker and team captain Daymion Sanford expected to miss part of season in latest injury update

Texas A&M opens the year against Missouri State, Arizona State, and Kentucky— all three being games in which the Aggies should be double-digit favorites given where they'll rank coming into the season. If Sanford were to miss any stretch of time in the season for Texas A&M, those first three games would be the ones that fans would pick.

However, the fourth game of the year for Texas A&M will be a trip to Death Valley to face off with the LSU Tigers in Baton Rouge for a second straight year. Having Sanford back by that point could be a huge boost; his absence will be felt in that one pretty acutely if he is not able to return by that point.

There's no telling what the exact timeframe is here, of course, or how much of Sanford missing time will be due to getting back up to speed. It could be that he only misses the first two games; it could also be that he misses the first six.

Whatever the case, it is at least encouraging that the injury is not season-ending for him. Barring a setback, Sanford should be able to get back out on Kyle Field at some point this year and contribute to this Texas A&M football team— which they will definitely need.

In the meantime, the position will be in the hands of Noah Mikhail and transfer Ray Coney. Hopefully, those two get up to speed pretty quickly and are the big time contributors fans know they can be. Until then, best wishes to Daymion— heal up soon.
