Mike Elko is in position to have the best 2027 recruiting class in the whole nation.
He only has two things to do. He has to sign 5-star cornerback John Meredith III, and he has to get past Alabama. Meredith III is the best player in the country, and this would be a huge steal from Elko.
Meredith is a 5-star from North Crowley High School in the Dallas-Fort Worth area. Plenty of talent around there already, but if Elko can take advantage of his strong 2026 and 2027 classes already, he might finish with the best class in 2027, if he can get past Alabama. Steve Wiltfong for On3 and Rivals thinks A&M will be the last one standing.
2027 no. 1 overall recruit CB John Meredith III is between Alabama and Texas A&M
"My prediction is still on Texas A&M. I think he will visit College Station twice this Spring. "Steve Wiltfong
247 Sports lists Alabama and Texas A&M in the "warmer" category, while Ohio State, Texas and SMU are in the "warm" category. Some might be surprised that SMU is up there, but SMU is a short drive from where Meredith III currently lives.
I think the Aggies do have leverage for Meredith III simply because he's an in-state guy. Wiltfong also added that Alabama is putting pressure on the in-state Aggies, almost knowing they are slightly behind. We highlighted Meredith III before. Now, the Aggies look like they are in a great position.
Meredith III has tremendous ball anticipation and pinpoints the ball perfectly on his opponents. He's a star, and he still has a full season of high school football to go.
Alabama is the gold standard of recruits. After all, they are the "blue bloods" of college football, but Elko snagging the best recruit in the 2027 class could signal a passing of the torch for years to come.
