Texas Tech has been in the news a lot this offseason, mostly for reasons that have made Aggie fans knowingly chuckle and roll their eyes. If it’s not the gambling scandal surrounding Brendan Sorsby, it’s been the pillow-soft schedule that the Red Raiders play in the new Big 12– and it’s this latter fact that has begun to involve the Aggies in a way.
Joey McGuire and Texas Tech have been on a PR rehabilitation campaign thanks to how badly they got embarrassed in the Playoff last year, as well as— well, almost everything that’s happened to them this offseason. As part of this, McGuire has been complaining about the lack of desire among other teams to play the Red Raiders, and he just named the Aggies as a program unwilling to take on Tech.
There’s a major problem with his logic there, of course. Though it’s something that has become great fodder for Red Raider fans to bring up when trying to goad Aggie fans, there’s actually nothing that makes sense about bringing the Aggies into this conversation— try as McGuire and the Red Raider faithful might.
Texas Tech is trying to pull a fast one with complaint about Texas A&M not scheduling them
According to an article from On3 in discussion with McGuire, the Aggies were brought a proposal for a neutral-site game for 2027, but rejected the offer, which set Texas Tech fans off on tirades about how Texas A&M was too cowardly to face them:

Of course, there’s a lot more to the story. The proposed neutral-site game against the Aggies was in 2027, and could have only been put forth recently, as NC State bought out their previously-scheduled game with Tech a couple of months ago.
The Aggies have had a game on the docket with the Arizona State Sun Devils for quite some time— a game that was meant to be the return game of a home-and-home that will have its first installment only one month from today. While A&M only has 11 games on the docket for 2027 right now, adding a game against Tech would make the Aggies’ schedule made up of 11 Power teams— something no team in the country is doing.
That’s a result of the SEC’s move to 9 conference games, meaning the ASU game makes 10 Power opponents for the Aggies in 2027. Even Texas Tech doesn’t want to have that many Power opponents on their schedule— something they said when NC State canceled (they said they were seeking a Power replacement as well as a replacement for UNT, a non-power team).
On top of that, this would be the Aggies losing another home game for that season, which is a whole other issue in and of itself. That’s a major revenue stream for A&M that would dry up if Tech got their way with a neutral site game.
Texas Tech asking the Aggies to do something they are not willing to do themselves is hypocrisy, pure and simple. They’re just trying to clout chase off of Texas A&M’s brand and name while keeping their actual tactics in the background. Par for the course, apparently.
