Texas A&M backup quarterback Miles O'Neill has declared his intention to enter the transfer portal, thinning out the quarterback room for the Aggies as they enter another season with Marcel Reed as the prospective starter. O'Neill's potential has intrigued A&M fans since he stepped foot on campus, as he is a guy that can sling the ball all over the field, but his development thus far never put him in front of Reed.

O'Neill spent two years on campus for the Aggies— he was the no. 3 quarterback last year behind Conner Weigman and Marcel Reed, and the main backup this year. There was some thought that the Aggies may see him this season— based on historical precedent, the Aggies have had to have their backup start some games in each of the last few years— but he only appeared in relief.

That reality is part of why this is a little bit worrying for Aggie fans. Reed is obviously a runner, and had a couple of injury scares this year. Thankfully, he never missed extended time— which definitely played a big role in the Aggies' success this year, as it was the first season since 2020 that an Aggie QB started all 12 games— but past performance is no guarantee of future results.
With O'Neill out the door, the Aggies have Reed, the still-very-young Brady Hart, and the incoming Helaman Casuga at the quarterback position. While fans are high on Casuga's potential and are pleased with what they saw out of Hart this past season, the option is open for the Aggies to potentially add a more senior signal caller through the portal, much like they did with Jacob Zeno this past season.
Of course, there are plenty of fans who want the Aggies to swing big in the portal no matter what at quarterback, replacing Reed after his final two performances this year. That's a bit shortsighted, but it would probably be helpful to add an experienced voice in the room over this upcoming portal period.
