Texas A&M’s quarterback situation with Marcel Reed at the helm has been the subject of about as much discussion over the past couple of years as it has been since Johnny Football was behind center for the Aggies. The dynamic runner and passer has divided not only disinterested onlookers, but the Aggie fanbase itself during his time as the A&M quarterback.

I used to be a Reed doubter in favor of Weigman early in the previous season, but he showed that he had turned a corner in the latter part of 2024 and I was converted. He started off 2025 with a much more dynamic couple of games than anyone had anticipated— especially the contest up in South Bend— but the final two games of the season cast a pall over what was otherwise an incredibly good year for him.

Coming into his second year as the full-time starter, though, Reed has one simple goal in mind for himself, even as he hopes to lead the team to the national championship. By the time the year is out, Reed wants to be known as what he has already proven himself to be: a quarterback.

Texas A&M quarterback Marcel Reed knows what he has to prove in 2026 season

Of course, Reed is already a quarterback in the sense that he plays the position— but it’s not just that simple assertion that he means when he says this.

What Reed clearly means here is to indicate how widely he has been maligned by opposing fanbases and the media in general, who are too stuck in their prior assumptions about his ability to objectively judge him. There was a reason he was climbing up Heisman lists during last season, but there are many who simply refuse to see that.

Reed has clearly been putting in a lot of work this offseason, and fans are going to see how that pays off. There’s been a lot of talk about how the offensive line for the Aggies won’t be as good, and many are expecting to see that severely hamper Reed’s play, but I wouldn’t be so hasty. Holmon Wiggins has already spoken about doing more to utilize Reed’s legs in the passing game, moving the pocket and gettin him on the run, which is a spot that he found a lot of success in when Collin Klein would actually call such plays.

That could diffuse some of the worry about the offensive line, and it will give Reed a chance to show an area where he truly does shine. Whatever else can be said about Reed, too, the will to win that he has is second to no one else on the team. He’s found a way over and over— and if I had to guess, I think he will continue to do so in the upcoming year.
