Michael Earley is in the midst of a pivotal offseason for his program, and so far, he’s been knocking his hires out of the park. Texas A&M baseball announced today the hiring of Nolan Cain as the Aggies’ new Assistant Head Coach, bringing home another member of Texas A&M’s 2024 staff— and stealing away one of Texas’s top assistants.

Cain is known as one of the best recruiters in college baseball, which the Aggies saw play out time and time again when he was a member of the Texas A&M staff previously. He was Schlossnagle’s right-hand man down in Austin, so the Longhorns will now be scrambling to find a replacement.
This comes at a time full of unrest for the Longhorns, as well. After starting the year as the preseason no. 2 team in the nation, Texas went on to get swept in College Station and only manage one win in Omaha, barely even challenging the Georgia Bulldogs on their side of the bracket.
In other words, all is not well in Austin, apparently. Texas fans were already sick over the way their postseason concluded, so now with one of their top assistants heading to College Station for the same title, Longhorns are positively apoplectic.
Michael Earley steals away Nolan Cain from Jim Schlossnagle in perfect move
With the Longhorns’ exit from Omaha having just recently come about, this is nearly a mirror image of what happened two years ago with Schlossnagle absconding from College Station for Austin. No sooner did Cain get home than he was packing up to head out— of course, sans all of the bluster in press conferences about never leaving.
The Aggies did what was necessary to get one of the top assistant coaches in the sport, according to Kendall Rogers of D1Baseball. They are set to make Cain one of the highest-paid assistants in the sport, showing just how committed they are to this process.
Cain will head to College Station as one of the highest paid assistants in @NCAABaseball, I'm told. That's quite a get for the #Aggies, to say the least. https://t.co/cKe9YdCqPV

You can expect to see the Aggies’ recruiting begin to trend upward almost right away. It will be interesting to see if the Ags can pull off any big time flips from the Longhorns’ class, though these things are a little less common in the world of college baseball.
Texas A&M is already killing it in the portal for the upcoming year, having secured the no. 1 player in the transfer ranks for the upcoming year, and Cain will only help with that. This is a big time move for the Aggies, no question about it.
Cain joins Barry Enright as Earley’s two hires this offseason, and both are massive moves for the program. Though things petered out at the end of the year for the Aggies, Earley has once again done some impressive things this offseason to address the issues that manifested over the previous year for the Aggies.
This should give Texas A&M fans a massive boost of confidence for the upcoming season. Not only have they added a big name to their own staff, they’ve depleted their main rivals’ staff of one of its most important pieces. Not a bad two-for-one.
