Texas A&M football has been without starting linebacker Scooby Williams since the close of the first half against Notre Dame in week three. Williams's last play for the Aggies in that game was his interception of a tipped CJ Carr pass that led to a Texas A&M touchdown to take the lead into halftime.
He sustained a lower-body injury on that play and sat out the rest of the game— and though he's been described as "day to day" several times since then, he has yet to get back on the field. Aggie fans have been really pleased with backup linebacker Daymion Sanford's level of play since then, of course, but getting Scooby back has been a priority.
It looks like that priority will come to fruition as soon as this weekend against Florida. Though Williams is listed as "questionable" in the most recent injury report for Texas A&M, Mike Elko let something slip on his radio show that demonstrates just how bullish he is on Scooby's chances to return.
Mike Elko hints that Scooby Williams will be back for Florida game after injury
Elko mentioned on the Aggie Football Hour last night that "we should have Scooby Williams this week" when discussing the injuries to his football team. This is a higher level of optimism than the injury report currently expresses, of course, and for a coach who is normally taciturn about his players' health, it's a really great sign.
Of course, the Aggie defense has looked its best over the last two weeks, when Williams hasn't been playing, but that has a lot to do with factors besides his absence. Sanford has played quite well, but it's not clear that Scooby would have played worse than he did thus far— in fact, given that they are similar archetypes of player, I think Scooby's physical maturity could have even helped more.
The last couple of weeks have shown that the Aggies have a bright future with Sanford, but Scooby won the job for a reason. While no. 27 will no doubt see an increased share of snaps, I think it's clear that Williams still needs to be the main guy here.
