Mike Elko's Monday press availability was kicked off by some huge coaching news for the Maroon and White, as the head man for the Aggies announced that WR coach and co-OC Holmon Wiggins would be promoted to the offensive coordinator spot following Collin Klein's departure for Kansas State.

This was a move that some saw coming, but it will no doubt be a pretty controversial move in the eyes of some who desired some more experience with this hire. Wiggins has been around plenty of elite offensive coaches in his time, and is an elite receivers coach in his own right, but has never coordinated an offense before.

The big time positive here is that this preserves a heck of a lot of continuity on the staff, just like the defensive coordinator hire did. The Aggies elevated Lyle Hemphill upon the departure of Jay Bateman, a guy who had been in the program for this past year and has a lot of experience with Elko and his defenses, and now they're elevating another assistant in Wiggins.
Elko also confirmed that Collin Klein would remain as the play caller for the Aggies throughout the College Football Playoff. This should be a relief to Aggie fans, of course, though some no doubt believe that this is simply a distraction— a narrative that should be ignored, of course.
There's one sense in which this hire reduces risk— you don't want a complete transformation of the offense, going to an entirely new system when you've taught and recruited to this system— but it also has the risk of the unknown. Elko has earned a lot of trust here, of course— he's run the program impeccably in a lot of ways up until this point, so fans should give him the benefit of the doubt.
