Mike Elko has clear OC move to make after shocking Collin Klein news

The answer for Mike Elko could be on the Aggie staff right at this very moment.

With Texas A&M offensive coordinator Collin Klein now officially accepting the head coaching job at his alma mater Kansas State, the Aggies are going to be needing a new man in the chair for the upcoming year. While there are several great and attainable options for the Aggies outside of the program, it's worth asking if the answer could come from within as well.

Since Klein has been the play caller in Aggieland, most fans have referred to him simply as the offensive coordinator, as that's often the subtext of that title. However, Klein has only ever technically been the co-offensive coordinator while in Aggieland, something fans often forget.

The other co-offensive coordinator is receivers coach Holmon Wiggins, whom the Aggies lured away from Alabama when Nick Saban was still the head man in Tuscaloosa. It could be that the best thing for staff continuity is simply promoting Wiggins to the full-time offensive coordinator spot.

Texas A&M could solve offensive coordinator problem by simply promoting Holmon Wiggins

Wiggins has been around some elite offensive minds in his day, and while he has never called plays, that doesn't mean he couldn't be excellent at doing so. It seems like the Aggies have been anticipating Klein's departure for some time, so it's possible that they're getting him ready for a role like this already.

The upside there is a lot of continuity in philosophy, as Wiggins has obviously been working alongside Klein for the last two years. That would mean that Marcel Reed and the other offensive players wouldn't really have to learn a new system— Wiggins could stick with the offense that is already in place.

The risk, of course, is everything that comes with a first-time play caller. His tendencies may be more obvious than a guy like Klein, and his ability to mix things up may not quite be there yet.

The other concerning thing is that Wiggins has been a big time assistant at several programs, but has yet to become an OC. For some, that could be seen as a red flag— but if this is a program that is abour development, then it's also a place where elite coaches can develop.

This is an option worth considering for the Aggies. Whether it comes to pass or not, Wiggins should be given his due.
