The discussion about Texas A&M head coach Mike Elko and the Penn State job opening have, for some reason, persisted on for far longer than some Aggie fans would have liked. Opposing fans who are wary of what Elko is building in College Station have done their part to keep his name at the forefront of the search, and there are some things that are make sense circumstantially, but it's hard to think that he would leave the Aggies.

Coach Elko was asked about the rumors at a recent press conference, and though his response was fiery, it was more directed at the idea that these coaching searches are not covered well in general rather than insisting that he's not going anywhere.

On his radio show last night, however, the head man for the Aggies finally gave A&M fans exactly what they wanted to hear. He shut down the rumors in the best way possible, reassuring timid Aggies that he's here for the long haul— just like we always thought.

Mike Elko puts Penn State job rumors to bed completely in emphatic fashion

On his radio show with Texas A&M radio play-by-play man Andrew Monaco last night, Elko was asked— in a rather tongue-in-cheek manner— which of the open jobs he would be taking. The Aggie head man expressed some sarcastic incredulity before getting serious and saying "How about the Texas A&M job? Can I keep that one?"

He then made a comment about the fact that his wife— who, as they mention earlier in the show, had finally just moved to College Station after having to spend the previous year in their last home in North Carolina— was the decision-maker on where the Elko household would be going. You can then hear in the clip that his wife, Michelle, stands up and says they aren't going anywhere.

The applause at coach Elko's comments, as well as those of his wife, express the relief that Aggie fans feel here. Texas A&M is on a strong upward trajectory under their current head man, and keeping him around is a priority. Though an extension hasn't yet been finalized, it's no doubt in the works, and it will keep him around for the long term.
