Texas A&M under Mike Elko is getting closer to a championship run than they ever have in recent memory, making the College Football Playoff for the first time last season— only Elko's second year. With recruiting rolling the way that it is right now (the Aggies have the top-ranked class in the nation and it's going to be very hard for anyone to unseat them), Elko has the future headed in the right direction as well.
That said, besides said CFP appearance, the level of actual achievement for the Aggies is not yet where Elko has a lot of real skins on the wall. They've come close to an SEC Championship appearance in both of his first two years, but fallen just short, and have yet to record a postseason win.
You will hear opposing fans be quick to run to this argument, of course: the "empty trophy case" trope is alive and well among fans of rival schools to the Aggies. While there's really only something to it in a constrained sense, it certainly carries rhetorical power— and the way that Mike Elko leveraged it is sure to ruffle some feathers among Aggie fans.

Again, this is a trope that opposing fans love to point to in these situations— and that well may continue to happen even more so with this quote now out there, something that could annoy a lot of Aggie fans. But if this is Mike Elko using the stage to motivate his own players, it's honestly a masterstroke.
Though the Aggies took a huge, measurable step forward last season when they made the College Football Playoff, they can't simply rest on their laurels— not after what we saw take place down the stretch of last season. The Aggies were 11-0 and with a top-three seed and a trip to the SEC Championship on the line, they laid an egg in their biggest game of the year.
Despite all that, there could still be an attitude of achievement or entitlement that may set in after achieving the program's highest win total since 2012. Elko is making sure that doesn't happen, and he is doing so not only privately but publicly too.
His message is clearly resonating, as the lack of trips to Atlanta or achievement in the College Football Playoff is something that several Aggie players are mentioning in their media availability. The program is united around their determination to add to that trophy case this season and beyond, and that kind of mentality is exactly what they'll need against their extremely tough 2026 schedule.
For whatever heartburn this could cause some Aggie fans to see, it would be better just to trust the head man. He's patently unconcerned with the narratives these troll types like to bring out— he's focused on the guys in that locker room and making them into the best team he possibly can for this fall.
