This didn't come out the way that the head man thought it would, but now he's got to deal with the blowback.

Most Texas A&M fans were looking to Mike Elko's postgame comments to hear what he would say about a possible change at quarterback, but it was a different quote that started making the rounds in a major way. When Elko was asked about the noise surrounding the program and the fanbase, he dropped a line that ended up hitting fans way differently than he most likely intended.

This was not what the fanbase, who are pretty rightly upset with the way things have gone so far this year, wanted to hear at all in response to this latest loss. To them, it comes off as a coach who is lecturing fans about their sentiment rather than focusing on fixing what needs to be fixed on this team.

Of course, Elko is focused on fixing what needs to be fixed with this team. If anything, he's way more focused on that than anything else— but fans are only inevitably going to hear this kind of comment and take it personally. It's the kind of thing that sounds like an indictment of any negative sentiment or the desire to vent any of it at all.

Mike Elko commits a completely unforced error with puzzling cesspool comment

Like Karels mentions in his follow up to this tweet, this is something that Elko no doubt meant to be directed only towards a small section of the fanbase, not the Aggie faithful in general. He didn't even mean the entirety of TexAgs— as someone who has been on the site for a while, it does in fact become a cesspool when things are going badly for the team (or, honestly, even during games where things are going fine— there's just a loud subsection of posters who can't wait to air grievances on almost every game thread).

I think it's very likely that Elko will open his Monday presser addressing this comment, given how much it has broken containment and spread across the internet. You have Ralph Russo and Josh Pate registering reaction to your postgame presser comment, which means it's gotten to the point where you have to say something.

Is this reason to believe that things are spiraling out of Elko's control? I don't necessarily think so. He's clearly extremely frustrated, of course, but that doesn't mean things in the locker room have gone completely topsy-turvy— in fact, the team still looks like they're pretty together as a unit, just that they are searching for answers.

Regardless, though, this is going to be a moment that fans will look back on if things continue to trend downwards and pinpoint as a watershed moment. If things turn around, of course, this will be all but forgotten as we go forward.

In that sense, I hope it's something that gets forgotten quickly. When things are going badly, people will point the finger at anything possible— and there's no doubt that fans will do that exact thing with this comment from Elko if they have the opportunity.
