Mike Elko still won't budge on benching Marcel Reed, but his tone is shifting

This may be nothing, but it may be pretty significant for the Aggies' future at the quarterback position.

Texas A&M fans are calling more rabidly than ever for a change at the quarterback spot. Things have completely deteriorated at signal caller for the Aggies, to the point that A&M is reaching historic lows when it comes to offensive production.

The problems go beyond quarterback, but that's the most important position on the field. With the talent that the Aggies have on the roster, it's easy to feel that, if things get figured out there (easier said than done, of course), then it could have huge downstream effects for this team.

That said, there's a huge question as to whether the Aggies have anyone on their roster that's any better than Reed right now. The depth behind him consists of redshirt freshman Brady Hart— who already reclassified up a year— and true freshman Helaman Casuga. Despite those less-than-ideal options at quarterback, though, fans are wanting a change anyway— and Mike Elko's tone may be shifting just a bit on that question.

Mike Elko's tone has slightly changed on quarterback swap, but he's still not making a move yet

Here's what the head man had to say when asked about a change at the position:

Let's be clear: that is not a signal in the slightest that he is about to make a change at the position. However, it is definitely a different tone than he took following the Kentucky game, where he simply flat-out denied that he was going to consider benching Reed in favor of Brady Hart.

Does that mean that he's wavering on his stance, or is it simply the result of a coach that feels more than just a little bit demoralized given the way things have gone over the last few weeks? Only time will tell on that one, but it's notable that there's been a bit of a shift, whatever the reason, in his emphasis about it.

This next weekend will provide something of an opportunity on that front, though. The Aggies have a game against The Citadel that should be a layup for the maroon and white, and so if they want, they could simply go to Brady Hart a little more quickly than they otherwise would have.

If he really is a guy that can give them an opportunity to win, fans should be able to see that in the way that he plays even against lower-level competition. That's not to say that if he balls out against The Citadel, then he's going to do so against more difficult defenses, but it will give fans a litmus test to see whether he can perform better than Reed against a similar opponent.

With hopes of a Playoff berth now completely out the window, moving to a younger QB has a little bit less of a risk than it did otherwise. This is the time where you begin to look towards the future and build for that rather than trying to make a run for this season— with the way things have gone, that well could be the right thing for the program, as painful as things could get for A&M fans.
