One of Texas A&M football's most important pieces on defense in linebacker Scooby Williams could be coming back earlier than anyone expected, according to the update Mike Elko gave in his media availability today.
Mike Elko chimed in on the Aggies' defensive injuries to Bryce Anderson and Scooby Williams today, and one was far more uplifting than the other. Elko said pretty definitively that Bryce would be out for Saturday's game, but he would not rule out a possible return for Williams.
The exact phrase the Aggie head man used when characterizing Williams' status was "day to day." That's obviously much better than directly ruling him out, but it's also no guarantee that Scooby will be ready for this game against Auburn. However, given that most had been of the belief that Scooby wouldn't be participating in this game, "day to day" is far better than that expectation.

Improving every day is obviously big news. It remains a distinct possibility that he's not ready to go against Auburn, but it certainly feels like his timeline continues to get moved up.
Williams's presence would be massive in this game if he is, in fact, able to play. He is probably the Aggies' most athletic linebacker (though Daymion Sanford could also vie for that title), and so keeping him as a spy on the very quick Jackson Arnold would be very helpful for Texas A&M on the defensive end.
Even if he's not able to go, though, that spot is in good hands with Sanford. Williams was listed on the depth chart that was released this week as a starter, so that could possible signal some tacit optimism, but it also could be a formality, of course.
More than anything, Aggie fans are hoping for a complete recovery for Scooby. If he needs to take another week off to recover fully, then that's what he should do— this defense can still take on the chl
