Texas A&M football legend Myles Garrett has received nearly every honor that an NFL defensive player can hope to get— he’s a two-time Defensive Player of the Year selection, after all, and is coming off of a season where he broke the single-season sack record. Garrett’s profile just keeps rising, and he is clearly the best-known Aggie player in any professional sport.

His recent trade to the Rams is something that will only further this effect, of course— not only are the Rams located in LA as opposed to Cleveland, where he was previously, but they are a true contender, where the Browns never were while he was there. If Garrett and the Rams can make a deep playoff run, it will lead to more and more people recognizing his greatness.

That recognition is already beginning to come, however, as Garrett was just honored last night for some special moments he was a part of this past season. The former Aggie pass rusher figured in prominently to ESPN’s annual ESPY event, as he was awarded both Best Record-Breaking Performance as well as Best NFL Player.

Myles Garrett honored as best player in NFL in ESPY awards

It’s not often you see a defender named as the best player in the NFL— it’s sort of a contrarian opinion to have in many ways— but Myles makes that tough to deny. The impact he has on the game at the most important position on the defense is such that you can’t really downplay how massive of a talent he rally is.

You really don’t ever see defensive players getting an opportunity to vie for the NFL MVP award— much like the Heisman in college, it is essentially a quarterback award at this point— but the hype around Myles is beginning to pick up enough that, if he were to have another huge season, he would be legitimately considered.

The defensive player of the year awards that he has received are more than enough in most people’s books to show him as one of the best and brightest the league has to offer, but rising to MVP level is another tier entirely. However, winning an award like this shows that the winds may just be starting to blow in that direction— which is extremely exciting for Aggie fans.

As for his other honor— the Best Record-Breaking Performance ESPY— could it have been anything else? There are a lot of impressive feats we see from around the sports world every day, but breaking that single-season sack record was something few thought was possible, and Garrett managed it with ease.

These are well-deserved awards, but the way Garrett’s star is rising is the real story here. Don’t be surprised, now that he is in LA, if he becomes even more of a star than he has been thus far in his career.
