In Mike Elko's soon-to-be second season as an Aggie head coach, his cadre of offensive weapons has drastically improved from 2024.
2024 was a year of growing pains, summed up well by the benching Conner Weigman for Marcel Reed in the middle of the season. One of Weigman's best accomplishments last season was developing his receivers to the next level for Reed to eventually take over.
One of those that excelled under Weigman was the Swedish tight end, Theo Melin Ohrstrom. Melin Ohrstrom went for 10 catches, 184 yards and two touchdowns in 2024. Even with a new face set to battle for some snaps next season, Melin Ohrstrom should still be the main guy at tight end for 2025.
Ohrstrom should take a bigger leap in 2025
When Amari Niblack transferred from Texas to Texas A&M, it meant a first in the rivalry that nobody really expected. With the emergence of Gunnar Helm. Niblack saw Texas A&M as his last chance to make noise in his collegiate career.
As an Aggie who has been through quarterback changes and as someone already on Elko's good side, the tight end battle should be Melin Ohrstrom's to lose. He was a threat inside the 20-yard-line, and proved that he can make some tough catches at times.
Even with Micah Riley and Nate Boerkircher being added to the roster this offseason, Riley hasn't gotten much action in his career so far. Boerkircher doesn't really catch the ball a whole lot, and was more of a run blocker in his tenure with Nebraska. Melin Ohrstrom's lowlight was dropping a key pass in the Auburn game, but it's those plays that stick with you to get better.
The writing on the wall is for Melin Ohrstrom to add onto his stat sheet. With Elko already having a familiar face, and the tight end position clearly being emphasized this offseason, you can almost guarantee that Melin Ohrstrom should get more reps in the 2025 season. We're listing him as our underrated offensive Aggie going into 2025.
