Texas A&M Football Will See Immediate Boost from Portal Addition of Nic Scourton
Over the next few weeks, I will be writing profiles of each of the names that Texas A&M football has brought in via the portal so that Aggie fans can get familiar with the newcomers donning Maroon and White this fall. The guy at the top of that list, without a doubt, is Bryan, TX, native and former Purdue Boilermaker Nic Scourton.
From the moment that Scourton entered the portal, he was a top priority for the Aggies. After what they had lost along the defensive line, a guy with a skillset like his was even more of a priority than normal. Make no mistake, however: with the measurables and production that Scourton boasts, he was a take for every team in the nation.
Already the best pass rusher in the entire Big 10 conference, even as a just a sophomore, Scourton notched 10.0 sacks this past year to lead the conference. That accompanied 50 total tackles and 15 TFLs to give him a very impressive 2023 statline. He's not just a pure edge rusher, either: his run stopping ability was also among the best in the nation. He's the whole package, in other words.
So where does he fit in Elko's defense? The fact of the matter is that this is a guy that you have to get on the field no matter what. I foresee him as a starter along the line, accompanying luminaries like Shemar Turner, David Hicks, and Shemar Stewart. He can play either with his hand in the dirt or a two-point stance; given the full complement of his abilities, he'll see a heavy load of snaps.
The impact that Scourton's transfer brings is hard to overstate. There were very few players that could come in and be an upgrade over some of the outgoing talent from Texas A&M football; Scourton was one of them. His arrival heralds the advent of a ferocious and furious pass rush in College Station, one that will strike fear into the heart of every team with the Aggies on their schedule.
