Breaking down Conner Weigman's explosive performance for Texas A&M football vs Mizzou
Breaking down Conner Weigman's huge day for Texas A&M football against Missouri Tigers
Coming into the season, there was no shortage of hype around Conner Weigman's potential with Texas A&M football. Some were labeling him a darkhorse Heisman contender; some were evern calling him a player with a shot at being drafted in the first round this upcoming spring.
Now, the opener against Notre Dame, followed by a protracted period of missing games with injury, put a damper on a lot of that talk. But in Weigman's triumphant return to the field, he reminded everyone of why exactly he was being considered in that regard coming into the year.
He was magnificent in this game, especially considering how much time he had missed and the fact that he was stepping in after an injury. He was finding holes in the zone, dealing to players down the field, and making good decisions all day.
Jordan Rodgers, while on the call, couldn't say enough good things about Weigman's accuracy as well as his process. He pointed out more than once that the Aggie QB was moving comfortably through his progressions, quickly finding the man the defense hadn't accounted for and delivering an accurate ball.
Here is a preliminary look at his numbers on the day:
18/22 passing
81.8% completion
276 pass yards
12.5 YPA
5 carries
33 rush yards
6.6 YPC
93.6 QBR
That's a pretty impressive performance. For a more detailed breakdown, here's Clark Brooks's analysis of Weigman's pass chart:
The numbers that leap out the most to me here are the adjusted completion percentage (90% here) and the 59.1% passing success. That means that Conner was right on target all day and was consistently moving the chains with his passes. Even when he was checking it down, he was placing the ball well enough that the receiver or the back could make some hay with his pass.
Overall, that was an elite performance by Weigman. It's the kind of game that will win you any huge contest in the SEC—or the whole sport, for that matter. String a couple more of those together, and who knows where this Aggie team might end up?
