Texas A&M baseball rides power hitting early and impeccable Aschenbeck late to gain a 1-0 series lead against Tennessee

We are now one win away, Texas A&M baseball fans. The Aggies have taken a 1-0 lead in the College World Series final over the Tennessee Volunteers, remaining undefeated in the postseason while handing the Vols only their second loss since the regular season ended.

The Aggies got things kicked off in a hurry. Down 0-2 in the count, Gavin Grahovac clocked a pitch that was up and away, meeting it with the barrel of the bat for a leadoff home run. The Ags would plate one more run thanks to Caden Sorrell before the inning had elapsed—what a way for the two freshman to get things started for the Aggies.

Tennessee would score one in the second despite some great pitching from Prager. Five more runs were scored for the Ags in the third, however, to put the Ags up 7-1.

The Volunteer fielding left a lot to be desired in this one; the Aggies scored several times off of Tennessee errors. The Vols didn't come into this one with the most stellar fielding percentage, but they looked a bit like the moment was too big for them at times.

Prager continued to deal into the fifth inning before being replaced with Josh Stewart. Stewart continued his hot streak, getting out of a jam to send the game to the sixth inning, and guided the Aggies through to the seventh as well. It was the top of that seventh frame where the Ags plated two more runs, thanks once more to a homer from—who else—Kaeden Kent.

Two homers for the Vols scored three runs in the bottom of the seventh, though, and A&M's hopes of saving their star closer for later in the weekend had to be set aside. Aschenbeck delivered again, though, shutting out Big Orange for the remainder of the game. Ice in his veins, he struck out two tenacious Volunteer batters to end the 9th with runners on the corners.

The Aggies now have a 1-0 lead in the College World Series final. One more win, and the Maroon and White will be national champions in baseball for the first time. One more.
