Texas A&M football is building a special recruiting class at the defensive back position in 2025

With the recent commitment of top-50 player Adonyss Currie to Texas A&M football, the Aggies' 2025 recruiting class moved up to the 7th-rated in the nation, with plenty more room to grow. Even more than that, though, the Aggie defensive back class continued in particlar continued to add to its ranks.

When Mike Elko took the job and saw this Aggie football team play for the first time, he saw a squad that was forced to start two walk-ons in the back half of the defense. Kent Robinson and Sam Mathews acquitted themselves well against Oklahoma State, without a doubt, but Elko could tell that more was needed at that position.

He got to work right away, bringing in a boatload of defensive backs through the portal. This, though, was a band-aid solution: while it will yield solid results this year without a doubt, the Aggies needed something longer-term. Namely, they needed an influx of talent from the high school ranks.

This is exactly what Elko has been doing so far in the 2025 class: picking up talented defensive back after talented defensive back. Specifically, he's been picking up players with top-end speed.

Deyjhon Pettaway of Katy was a longtime Aggie lean who finally pulled the trigger earlier this year. Jamar Beal-Goines was a handpicked player by Aggie DB coach Jordan Peterson who has already risen astronomically in the rankings. Cobey Sellers was a big win over OU and Texas from the Houston area. Finally, the aforementioned Currie was a bigtime get out of California who is and looks to continue to be a riser in the ratings.

Still on the board for the Aggies are 5-stars Dijon Lee, Trey McNutt, and Jonah Williams. Texas A&M football would take a commitment of any of these guys no matter what, and they have a real shot at all of them. As things stand right now, this is a great defensive back class—maybe one that could use another player or two at safety. If Elko and company can add one or two more of these priority names? It would border on elite.
