Will Conner Weigman be available for Texas A&M football against Missouri?
Rumors have been swirling all week that Texas A&M football's QB1, Conner Weigman, was ramping up to a return in today's game against Missouri. The Aggies have been without Weigman since game three of the season, leaving the signal caller position for backup Marcel Reed to start.
Reed has managed a win in all three of the games he has started, but the Aggies have looked quite unimpressive in two of them. Given that all three games came against far lesser opponents, Aggie fans were beginning to wonder whether Reed was indeed the best choice moving forward.
Weigman opens up the offense quite a bit more than Reed does, thanks to his greater ability to push the ball down the field. Reed's rushing ability is definitely more dangerous than Conner's, but Weigman carrying the ball enough to make the defense account for that facet is really all Klein needs from a schematic standpoint.
The back and forth has raged these last few weeks, but we may be nearing the end of it. Pete Thamel announced this morning that Weigman is "improving" and will be available for the game today.
If Weigman is indeed available—and more available than his "emergency backup" role that he apparently had against Florida (though it's dubious if that constituted actual availability)—then this could be a preview of where the Aggies are going for the rest of the season.
I wouldn't be surprised to see a little two-quarterback system with some designed packages for Reed today. He obviously has a lot more experience under his belt at this point than he did at the beginning of the season, but I think the starting nod will still go to Conner.
In any case, it's much better to have Conner back than not, obviously. Hopefully he gets the start today and puts up a huge number through the air en route to a decisive victory for the Aggies.
