Where Texas A&M football stands with top 2025 prospects: CB already taking shape
Texas A&M football 2025 recruiting outlook: Cornerback commits have exciting upside, with Aggies pressing hard for one huge name
If there's one area where I'm not worried about Texas A&M football under Mike Elko, it's defensive back. A former DB himself, Elko coaches his defenses back-to-front—and, in doing so, routinely produces high-quality, high-impact defensive backs. Antonio Johnson is one such example for the Aggies. I also think of the career year Donovan Wilson had in his one year under Elko.
That's just the development piece. The recruiting so far has been impressive as well, especially out of the portal; the backfield for the Aggie defense was completely remade in hardly any time at all once the head man for Texas A&M football put his hand to the plow in the transfer ranks.
And these were not guys coming in just to fill out the depth chart, either: there's something exciting about each piece the Aggies brought in, and several have a chance to start. BJ Mayes and Marcus Ratcliffe looked amazing during the spring game, and Jaydon Hill was right in there making plays as well.
As we look to the 2025 recruiting cycle, the Aggies already have a head start at defensive back relative to other positions. Deyjhon Pettaway, the third commit of the class, is the second-highest ranked Aggie commit in the composite—and he is even underrated, if you ask those who see him play regularly.
A sticky, athletic corner, Pettaway will bring high upside to College Station. His was a key recruitment in the city of Houston for Elko and company, so credit to them for locking things down quickly. Speaking of underrated, recent Aggie pledge Jamar Beal-Goines seems slated for a huge jump up the rankings. Beal-Goines's athletic testing numbers have to be seen to be believed; similarly unbelievable is how far down the ratings he currently is while boasting said numbers.
Aggie fans will be watching an announcement closely this weekend, as Shadow Creek CB Cobey Sellers is making his commitment announcement at 2 PM on Saturday. The Aggies have been trending in a big way for the Houston-area product recently, and he very well could be the third pledge from the defensive backfield for the Aggies—which would be huge for Texas A&M football.
If we're dreaming big for this class, the Aggies have had a strong connection in the past with North Shore CB Devin Sanchez. The 5th-ranked player in the nation is currently committed to Ohio State, which won't be easy to overcome. If the Aggies can get him back on campus, though, things could get interesting. He's shown a soft spot for A&M before, so it's not as if there's no leg to stand on.
I'd also keep my eye on a guy like Adonyss Currie, out of Lancaster, CA. Currie officially visited the Aggies last month, and it's not out of the question that the top-120 player makes a return to campus at some point.
