Texas A&M has had quite a few five-star players since joining the SEC, but it’s a mixed list as far as booms and busts. There are some names that immediately jump to mind as the best of all time— but the same could be said for the worst.
This list counting down the best five-star signees in A&M history seeks to rank them based on impact in their time with A&M as well as how Aggie fans remember them. The only criteria to be on the list (besides being a five-star signee) is that the player must have either concluded their A&M career already or have had significant playing time— no future signees or players that have yet to touch the field in any meaningful way are on this list.
With all that said, let’s jump in.
Ranking the top 5-star signees for Texas A&M since joining the SEC
23. Denver Harris
There’s not much more that needs to be said about this. He played half a season and flamed out spectacularly for off-the-field reasons— he’s going to be at the bottom of this list for most Texas A&M fans.
22. Demond Demas
If it’s not Harris at the bottom, it’s Demas. He had all the promise in the world based on his athletic talents, but he ended up with hardly any stats at all before being dismissed from the team.
21. Chris Marshall
It was honestly a tough call between Marshall and Demas. Demas was with the team longer, but the flaming out that we saw from Marshall’s as not quite as public, so he gets the edge here.
20. Speedy Noil
Yet another receiver that didn’t live up to what fans expected— while Noil was far more productive than either Marshall or Demas, his career still embodies disappointment for many Aggie fans.
19. LT Overton
Overton was a top-five recruit in the 2023 cycle before reclassifying up to 2022 to join the Aggies’ top-ranked class. He never found his footing and was a non-factor for the maroon and white.
18. Gabriel Brownlow-Dindy
GBD by all accounts was a plus for the Aggies in the locker room despite his eventual transfer, but he hardly ever sniffed the field. His pluses in other areas give him a bit of a boost here, but it’s disappointing that he never lived up to his billing (thanks to injury and other factors).
17. Kyler Murray
Murray’s transfer may put him closer to the bottom for some fans, but he had some positive reps for the Aggies and recorded a couple of wins as their quarterback. Given some of these other lowlights, that’s enough to keep him out of the basement.
16. Kyle Allen
Allen was not the player that Murray was, but he recorded a lot more wins than Murray did, including over a top-three Auburn team. The three-pick-six game against Alabama the following year and his eventual transfer sink him a bit lower on here, though.
15. Walter Nolen
Nolen made some huge plays at times for the Aggies and was clearly skilled, but leaving for Ole Miss and his association with a dark time in program history has Nolen lower on this list. He is technically the highest-rated signee in program history per the 247Sports Composite, however.
14. Evan Stewart
Stewart was legitimately pretty productive for the Aggies despite all of the heartburn he caused fans. There are still some pretty bitter fans when it comes to E-Stew, but you can’t fault his productivity— he was top-three in receiving for A&M two seasons in a row.
13. Conner Weigman
Weigman never quite lived up to his promise as a passer, but he was still the quarterback for some memorable wins— and even in the Miami game in 2023, when the Aggies lost, he was outstanding on film.
12. Terry Bussey
Bussey is poised to have his best season yet in the maroon and white, but he’s already made a big impact in the kick return and receiving game. He’s had a bigger adjustment to college than many anticipated, but it seems like he’s being slept on going into the upcoming year.
11. Shemar Stewart
Stewart was a first-round draft pick out of Texas A&M despite not having very many big time stats. He, if nothing else, was a solid and dependable presence on the line for the Aggies that opponents had to game plan around thanks to his physical gifts.
10. Jaylon Jones
Jones was a day-one starter for the Aggies, but there was always something missing with his game in the mind of many fans. He, like Stewart, was solid and dependable, even if he wasn’t a lockdown corner— so he’s higher up on this list as well.
9. Rueben Owens
Owens has not yet been the lead back in his three years in the maroon and white, and there are plenty of criticisms from fans, but he’s certainly had some highlight moments for the Aggies. With the lead role now his, fans are excited to see what he can bring to this team.
8. DeMarvin Leal
Leal had some game-wrecking moments for the Aggies but was never quite the uber-feared pass rusher that he seemed he might become early on in his career. He was certainly a star for Texas A&M, but has yet to find his footing in the NFL.
7. DJ Hicks
Hicks is another player who has had a few eye-popping moments, but he has yet to fully break out. Under Elijah Robinson this year, look for one of the highest-rated signees in Texas A&M history to have a huge season.
6. Daylon Mack
Mack is the only name on this list that bridged the gap between the Sumlin and Fisher eras, and that year under Fisher saw him completely rejuvenated. His first season had the biggest highlights, but he finished out his career as a beloved member of the Aggie football family.
5. Shemar Turner
Turner was right on the cut line between four and five star, but he was immediately an absolute menace for the Aggies. His tenure in the maroon and white had some highlights and some lowlights, but he was a feared presence on the defensive line the entire time.
4. Kenyon Green
Green started from his very first game on campus back in 2019 and was part of one of the best season in recent program history in 2020– not to mention the historic Alabama win in 2021. He hasn’t been great in the NFL, but his time in College Station was unassailable.
3. Ricky Seals-Jones
This may be a controversial placement for some fans, but Seals-Jones was nothing but a really solid player for the Aggies who made some huge catches. He’s associated somewhat with the mediocrity of the post-Manziel Sumlin years, but he was a key player for the Aggies and made a lot of plays.
2. Christian Kirk
Kirk exploded onto the scene in his first game, scoring two electric touchdowns against Arizona State in Houston, and never looked back. He was always worth tuning in to see, as he routinely did unbelievable stuff on the field with the ball in his hands— his highlight reel is worth revisiting.
1. Myles Garrett
This placement should not have surprised you in the slightest. Garrett is possibly the greatest defender in Texas A&M football history, and is currently the best defensive player in the NFL. There’s no question that he is tops on this list.
