Steve Sarkisian comes for Mike Elko’s recruiting crown but looks like he just whiffed

This all but seals the Aggies’ supremacy over the Longhorns in this upcoming recruiting cycle.

Texas A&M has been the leader in the clubhouse to finish the season with the top-ranked recruiting class of the cycle following an extremely strong summer on the trail, adding five-star after five-star. The Aggies had placed themselves out of range of pretty much every other team, but something that caught a lot of fans’ attention was the hard charge that the rival Texas Longhorns were making.

Texas won out for some key recruits, including five star players John Meredith and Ismael Camara, getting a bit of revenge on the Aggies for some big wins that the Ags had earlier in the cycle. While it seemed like a long shot that the ‘Horns could knock off the Aggies, making a move like this had the Aggie faithful’s attention.

That charge looks like it is faltering at the last moment, however, with some recent developments dealing a crushing blow to Texas’s chances. Texas just missed out on a huge piece that they were hoping to add to their class— and they may be about to lose on one of their top commits as well.

Steve Sarkisian’s charge to overtake Elko in recruiting just took the one L it couldn’t afford

The Aggies have been watching on with a bit of interest as the Longhorns have been slowly adding to their class, but that mild interest has turned to glee in the last couple of days. Texas was aiming to add the nation’s top receiver in Monshun Sales, but he spurned the Longhorns and committed to the hometown Indiana Hoosiers instead in Curt Cignetti’s biggest recruiting win yet.

Texas fans wanted to add Sales to their current top receiver commit, Easton Royal, who has been in the Longhorn class for quite some time. Texas A&M fans were imagining what it would look like in future Lone Star Showdowns if this came about, with a pair of five-star receivers going up against the Aggies’ star-studded defensive backfield.

However, not only will Sales not be part of that equation, it’s beginning to look doubtful if Royal will be either. Aggie fans saw a Texas meltdown begin last night when a massive pick came in from Steve Wiltfong for LSU to flip Royal from Texas— something that has apparently been brewing for quite some time.

That would be two five-star losses for the Longhorns back to back— something no team wants to see, of course, but Aggie fans are loving that it could take place with their chief rival. This would also secure the Aggies’ spot over and above the Longhorns, no matter what happens with a guy like Landen Williams-Callis.

Mike Elko needs to start beating Texas on the field soon, of course, and that begins with this season at Kyle Field, but he’s laying the groundwork for quite the run from the Aggies going forward. This latest series of events only helps him further things in a maroon and white direction.
