Texas A&M took quite a few haymakers today, as not only did they lose to the Kentucky Wildcats as a 17-point favorite, but they also may have lost one of their top playmakers for an extended period of time. Terry Bussey, one of the big stories of the offseason for his reportedly dominant fall camp, was in the midst of a breakout season for the Aggies— but he got hurt on the first play against the Wildcats.
There was not a lot of clarity in the immediate aftermath on what it was that had happened to Bussey, but it didn’t look good. He was taken back to the locker room instead of leaving the field for the sideline or going to the medical tent, which is almost always a bad sign.
Later on, he rejoined the team on the sideline in street clothes, communicating that he would not be back for this game. However, fans were hoping that this would still only be a short-term thing— but Mike Elko’s comments in the postgame all but completely dashed those hopes.

Elko’s entire postgame is really worth watching for fans— you can tell that he is intent on figuring out the issues and getting this team back operating the way they are supposed to, but the bit about Terry is a real kick to the stomach. Asked about Bussey’s status, Elko said that he was going to wait until Monday’s presser to make full comments, but that it seemed like a “long one” and that there was nothing to indicate that it would be a quick road back.
That’s not only a huge gut punch for this team’s chances— it’s a huge gut punch to fans thanks to what Bussey means to this program. Elko’s first five-star win, there’s no better guy on this team to root for than Terry, the pride of Timpson, Texas, and one of the best human beings on the team. His breakout this year was a long time coming, but it’s looking like it will be cut short thanks to this play.
The Aggies are really hurting at wide receiver now. Both Mario Craver and Isaiah Horton left the game at different points thanks to injuries, though they both eventually returned. Ashton Bethel-Roman didn’t play at all thanks to a prior injury— meaning fans saw a lot of TK Norman, Kelshaun Johnson, Aaron Gregory, and even Jayden Warren out there today.
Bussey is a Swiss Army Knife for this team— he can carry the ball, catch the ball, and even throw it a little bit if needed. He also does a lot in the return game for the Aggies, so this is a substantial loss if it goes the way it seems. Hopefully, it will be a quicker recovery than anyone anticipates right now— but at the moment, it’s hard to be lower than the Aggie faithful are.
