Texas A&M has just made a pretty massive addition to their defense via the transfer portal today, snagging the perfect replacement for Scooby Williams with Tulsa's Ray Coney. Coney, a first-team all-American Conference selection this past year, began his career at East Tennessee State before moving up to Tulsa, where he played last year.
Coney was immediately one of the biggest pieces of Tulsa's defense, as he notched an eye-popping 128 tackles last year for the Golden Hurricane. This is a man who was all over the field last season, making his mark as one of the best defenders among the Group of Five.

The Aggies were able to lock Coney down after only a 24-hour visit to College Station, showing just how formidable they are when it comes to portal recruiting. This is a huge feather in the cap of new linebackers coach Travis Williams already, as Coney will no doubt figure in prominently to the linebacker rotation next year.

With Scooby Williams headed to the NFL, the linebacking corps looked a little bit thin with only Taurean York, Daymion Sanford, and Noah Mikhail having significant experience at the position. Adding Coney is a big help in that room, and a massive way to upgrade.
Coney stands at 6'2" and 240 LBs— just a bit undersized for an SEC linebacker, but you wouldn't know it from the way he plays. He has only one year of eligibility to go, but it's clear that he could tell that Texas A&M was the place to shine in that final season.
The Aggies are scorching hot in the portal right now after adding to two positions of need already. Hopefully, this trend continues, and they can close out on some big names— including Cam Coleman— in the near future.
