Superstar Auburn wide receiver Cam Coleman has announced his intention to enter the transfer portal when the window opens on January 2. This is a positively earth-shattering announcement for the sport, as Coleman is clearly one of the most talented players in the country despite laboring in a less-than-ideal situation up until this point.
This is not only disastrous for new Auburn coach Alex Golesh, it is a huge opportunity for a Texas A&M team that is looking to reload in a major way at the receiver spot. With KC Concepcion now moving on to the NFL after this year, the Aggies are in a perfect spot to vie for Coleman's services in the upcoming year.
Texas A&M is in perfect position to land Cam Coleman out of the transfer portal
For those who don't remember, the Aggies actually held a commitment from Coleman for a long time when Jimbo Fisher was the coach in College Station. Following Fisher's departure, the receiver out of Phenix City, AL, flipped his commitment to nearby Auburn in what was a massive blow to the Aggies' class— Coleman ranked as the third overall player in the country at that point.
Coleman has local connections in Houston, which factored into his original commitment to the Aggies and could factor in here as well. However, with only one year left until he can declare for the NFL, those kinds of connections are likely not as relevant as they would have been in his original recruitment.
No, what matters more is NIL commitment and offensive fit— both of which the Aggies offer in a huge way. The Aggies leveraged KC Concepcion's final year to help him leap up draft boards, and they can offer the same thing to Coleman in the upcoming year.
It doesn't hurt, either, that Coleman is already familiar with new Texas A&M offensive coordinator Holmon Wiggins, who was receivers coach at Alabama when Coleman was in high school. That will go a long way for the Aggies as well.
This could be massive for the Aggies. They don't have a true X receiver on the roster right now, and Coleman would fill that void at an elite level. This would open up the offense for every other receiver on the roster, and allow them to soar to new heights in the upcoming year.
