Concerns surrounding Texas A&M baseball continue to mount as the season rolls on, and last night's game against Vanderbilt only increased those concerns. The Aggie pitching is the biggest worry for fans right now, and it got exposed in a big way against the Commodores, who ended up winning the opener in Blue Bell Park by a score of 14-8.
The offense is humming along a little bit right now, spurred on by Caden Sorrell, Gavin Grahovac, and company, but on the mound, there are plenty of issues. With a highly consequential series coming up next weekend, the Ags have to get their problems fixed, and fast.
Last night's disappointment was only diluted by what was happening to the Aggies' former coach and his team. While the Aggies dropped a dismaying game to the Commodores and have plenty of reasons for concern, the jaw-dropping result in the Longhorns' game served to distract A&M fans pretty well.
Texas A&M may have lost opener to Vanderbilt, but Longhorns' mystifying loss eases the pain
No. 2 Texas traveled to Columbia, SC this weekend to take on a miserable Gamecocks team that is reeling after their head coach, Paul Mainieri, stepped down only days ago. This is a South Carolina team that Arkansas beat by 16 in Columbia not long ago— and so you'd expect Schlossnagle and company to roll.
At least in the opener, that's not what happened. Texas didn't just lose to the Gamecocks— they were demolished by a score of 9-1. Nothing comes easy in the SEC, of course, but this is a truly horrid South Carolina team— they've lost to Queens, The Citadel, Northern Kentucky, and Charlotte.
And yet, they somehow pulled out a victory over the supposed no. 2-ranked team in the Longhorns. This isn't the first concerning loss that we've seen out of Schloss's team— their name brand and easy schedule may continue to prop them up for a while, but soon, it will all come crashing down.
Texas A&M has a lot to work on, but this result has to give them some hope for next weekend. It will maybe be the biggest home series we've ever seen at Blue Bell, and you can bet that the fans will be ready.
