Scorching-hot start won't be enough to save Earley's job in nightmare scenario

There's one thing that the man needs to get done this season, if nothing else— and it could be what decides his ultimate fate in College Station

The start of year two for Michael Earley has been far improved compared to his initial venture, but a specter still looms large over Texas A&M baseball— and it's coming to College Station in two weekends. Fresh off of the series win over Missouri, the Aggies return home triumphant and should be looking forward to the showdown with Vanderbilt this weekend— but it's clear that the series the following weekend is of much more import.

The no. 2 Texas Longhorns are coming to town soon for Jim Schlossnagle's first series in College Station since he shamefully departed directly following A&M's loss in the College World Series. The hatred for Schloss has not subsided one bit since that time, even though Aggie fans have had plenty to distract them in the interim.

After getting swept in Austin last season, though, Earley still has a lot to prove in this one. The fact that Schloss has his squad as the second-ranked team in the country figures in, but it's the who that matters here— that it's him and it's them. Getting swept again, at home this time, would be a nightmare scenario— and one that could cost Earley his job.

Texas A&M baseball must show up for Texas series or Michael Earley's job is on the line

The Aggies have had concerning showings in two out of three weekends against SEC competition: they scored more runs than the other team over the three games in both cases, but ended up going 1-2 in both cases as well. That won't be enough against Texas and Schloss.

Against the top-ranked UCLA Bruins last month, the Aggies got absolutely destroyed— given, it was a one-game sample size, and about everything went badly for the Aggies that possibly could have, but it doesn't inspire confidence. This will be as raucous and rowdy of a crowd as any that we've ever seen at Blue Bell Park, and the Aggies will need to deliver on the energy that will be there.

If Texas A&M loses this series— or, heaven forbid, get swept— then good record or no, Michael Earley's position is not safe. Last season was a huge black mark on his record, but it wasn't enough to kick him to the curb after just one year. There have been some obvious improvements here, but given the context of this matchup, Aggies cannot abide a showing like we saw in 2025.

Don't get me wrong: I don't think there's anyone who wants to win this series more than Earley does. It would be one heck of a proof of concept for his program and would go miles in securing him some goodwill. But it will be a herculean task, to say the very least— so this squad had better come correct for this one. The crowd certainly will.
