Texas A&M basketball completes best comeback since 2010-11 thanks to transfer Zhuric Phelps
Zhuric Phelps, the transfer from SMU, just proved to be arguably the best transfer in the SEC by willing his team to victory in what looked like a sure loss on the road against the Oklahoma Sooners.
We knew the Aggies were down their best player in Wade Taylor IV, who went down in the Texas game with a lower-body injury.
After a first half disaster, it looked like the Aggies had no rhythm from outside or many guys to drive inside and score. It seemed like the Aggies were really missing Taylor IV and his offensive abilities, and they had no answer in the first half.
The Aggies were down by as much as 18, but by rebounding better and forcing turnovers in the second half, the Aggies' style of play finally started to rev up— as well as Phelps' clutch play.
A late three from Jace Carter got the Aggies going too, but this was no doubt still a team win tonight for the Aggies.
"My team just believed in me and we got the win."Zhuric Phelps
This is a statement win for the Aggies without their best player. Credit to the Sooners for playing a perfect first half of defense, rattling the Aggies for not allowing them to shoot well on offense. The Aggies were able to find an answer in the second half, solely because of Phelps. The rebounding shouldn't be forgotten, either.
The Aggies out-rebounded the Sooners 17-8 on the offensive glass. Texas A&M basketball also led in takeaways, 18-9. They still played with the same mentality of toughness that Buzz Williams preaches, and this is no doubt a historic win for the Aggies on the road.
