Texas A&M fans have been trying their level best to read the tea leaves and see which Aggies have been breaking out this spring on the roster, attempting to discern who is set for a huge jump in this upcoming year. There are a lot of exciting true and redshirt freshmen on this year's squad, as well as some big time transfers, so guesses are wide-ranging.
One guy who has not been discussed very much, however, is defensive end TJ Searcy. The Florida transfer was solid for the Aggies last season, even if he saw limited snaps thanks to being behind a guy like Cashius Howell.
However, it may be the case that Searcy, though projected to figure in prominently to the rotation, is still being unfairly slept on. A recent development ahead of the spring game has Aggie fans wondering just how high his ceiling actually could get.
Texas A&M defensive end TJ Searcy is surprise first selection in spring game draft, possibly signaling breakout year
Searcy was the first overall selection by the Aggie team captains ahead of tomorrow's spring game— something that not many fans anticipated.

Now, in complete fairness, Marcel Reed and Daymion Sanford were the captains, and there are certainly a lot of Aggies on the injured list, including guys like Dezz Ricks, Dalton Brooks, and Terry Bussey.
Still, I'm not sure that many fans would have thought Searcy's name would be called in this draft ahead of players like Ashton Bethel-Roman, Rueben Owens, DJ Hicks, Mario Craver, or Marcus Ratcliffe. Each of those are players poised to take a big step headed into the upcoming season, while Searcy has been flying a little bit more under the radar.
Even star transfers like Rickey Gibson and Isaiah Horton weren't slotted in this position, which says a lot about how far Searcy has come this offseason. Could he be the heir apparent to Cashius Howell with Howell now moving on to the NFL? It would certainly be a dear wish of many Aggie fans that this comes to pass— but we'll get our first glimpse tomorrow to see if this actually ends up happening.
