At times this season, Texas A&M quarterback Marcel Reed has looked like a Heisman Trophy contender, but against the best opponents on the Aggies’ schedule, he hasn’t quite lived up to that billing. The redshirt sophomore struggled in his last time out against Texas, throwing two interceptions as the Aggies lost to miss the SEC Championship Game and finish the regular season 11-1.

His performance in the College Football Playoff against Miami wasn’t much better. Reed again threw two interceptions, completing 25 of his 39 passes for 237 yards in the 10-3 loss. The second interception came from the Miami five-yard line with 24 seconds left, and any doubts that Aggies fans had about their quarterback came to fruition.

Marcel Reed’s 4th quarter interception brings Texas A&M’s 11-win season to a brutal conclusion

In 2024, Reed wrestled the starting job away from the struggling Conner Weigman and entered this year as the undisputed QB1 in College Station. He justified Mike Elko’s belief in him with a hot start to the year, including a two-touchdown performance against Notre Dame. Reed led the Aggies to 41 points against the Irish, but even in that game, he completed just 45 percent of his throws.

For many, Reed’s shaky performance against Miami’s vaunted defense confirmed suspicions that he and the Aggies feasted on a favorable schedule. Playing Notre Dame in non-conference was A&M’s toughest test of the year, and they narrowly passed it. However, after that matchup, the Aggies played an unbelievable soft SEC slate, featuring the bottom five teams in the conference.

The Aggies will be without offensive coordinator Colin Klein, who will be heading to Kansas State, his alma mater, to take over as the program's head coach. While Klein was excellent all season, fans won't be too broken up about his departure after this offensive debacle. They may feel the same way about Reed too.

Against Power Conference opponents this season, Reed threw for just 15 touchdowns to 12 interceptions, including the CFP loss to Miami. The Aggies aren’t likely to dip into the transfer portal QB market, but they may need to if Elko wants to compete for a national championship because Reed came up small in the biggest game of the season.
