Texas A&M guard Pop Isaacs is expected to enter the transfer portal according to a report today by Jaxson Callaway of Aggie Yell. This will make the fourth school in five seasons of eligibility for Isaacs, who never quite turned into the big time scorer for the Aggies that A&M fans had hoped.
Isaacs had a significant impact on several games, especially down the stretch, but the consistent scoring that A&M needed was lacking throughout the course of the season. Recovering from a surgery and getting plugged into a new system will make that kind of thing happen, but it still wasn’t quite the addition A&M fans were hoping for.
Texas A&M basketball is now once again in the unenviable position of having to rebuild most of their roster from almost nothing. The better thing about this year is a proof of concept for Bucky Ball, as well as more of a head start on the portal compared to what they were dealing with in McMillan’s first offseason.
Texas A&M basketball set to lose Pop Isaacs to the transfer portal as Bucky McMillan once more set for a rebuild
Isaacs’ abilities are hard to question, but things never really clicked for him when he was on the floor for A&M this past season. The outside shot in particular was something the Ags sorely needed this season, and it just wasn’t going with the consistency that McMillan and Aggie basketball fans wanted to see.
That said, Isaacs is a guy that can certainly find success in greater measure at his next stop if the fit is right. He no doubt learned a lot over the last year, and if he properly applies it to whatever his next team is, he can once more be an impact player.
Texas A&M will need to do what they can to fill the slot of a scoring guard who can initiate the offense in Bucky McMillan’s system. Though Isaacs is departing, the way that Bucky was able to work the portal last season and the momentum he’s built over the last season should lead to a favorable outlook in the department going forward for Texas A&M basketball.
