Texas A&M football has built a special 2027 recruiting class so far, but they are taking some hits as the remaining top prospects shut down their recruitments. The Aggies have been big time players for almost half of the five-star recruits in this class, and while you knew you wouldn’t get every single player, there have certainly been some surprises.

Most Aggie fans expected five-star interior offensive lineman Albert Simien, for example, to be part of the class— and yet he chose Notre Dame on decision day. The Aggies were the leaders for John Meredith for quite some time as well, and he ended up committing to in-state rival Texas.

Once Meredith chose the Longhorns, it was clear that the Aggies needed to put all their resources towards their next target on the board in five-star corner Joshua Dobson. The South Carolina native had been intrigued by the Aggies for some time, and when they began to put the press on, many insiders thought they had all but secured his commitment.

However, now that decision day is actually here for Dobson, things are looking far less positive than they had been. With hours to go before he makes his announcement, Dobson’s predictions to Texas A&M have been flipped to the in-state South Carolina Gamecocks.

There had been a lot of chatter around the in-state Gamecocks for some time, but the Aggie faithful thought they could weather that particular storm without much trouble. However, insiders like Steve Wiltfong have mentioned in recent days that this was the top target overall for the Gamecocks and they were willing to go to great lengths to secure his commitment.

It would stand to reason that that includes, in particular, the NIL commitment that the Gamecocks are reportedly willing to make. The Aggies have made a habit of staying out of bidding wars, and when they already have a lot committed across the board to other five-stars, it’s going to be tough to face down a program that is willing to go to any lengths to secure their one top prospect.

With all that as the background, the Aggies have lost their predictions on Rivals for Dobson’s commitment, as both Steve Wiltfong and others have flipped their predictions over to the Gamecocks. The Aggies look like they’ll be on the wrong side of a five-star defensive back commitment again after looking like they’ll would have their pick of the top two DBs in the nation just a month ago.

Of course, the Aggies already have three five-star defensive backs committed in Raylaun Henry, Kamarui Dorsey, and JayQuan Snell. Their pass defense will be just fine with or without Dobson, but this is still a blow to a fanbase that thought they would get one of these top two players. Dobson is set to commit at 5 PM CT.
