Texas A&M recruiting fans got one heck of a gut punch in recent days as John Meredith, the nation's top corner and a player who many had penciled in for the Aggies, has begun to trend to Texas A&M's arch rival, the Texas Longhorns. Given Meredith's caliber as a recruit, this was a real blow to Aggie fans, despite the fact that A&M already is pulling in an all-time recruiting class at the defensive back position.
If there's one thing that Mike Elko has proven, though, it's that he always has a plan. Even though Meredith may be trending towards the burnt orange, the Aggies still have an opportunity to round out this DB class in style— and it's a plan that will make A&M fans elated if it does indeed come to pass.
Texas A&M can pivot from John Meredith by pressing hard for five-star CB Josh Dobson
The Aggies have been leaders for Meredith for some time, but fans may have forgotten that they were at the top of the list for quite a while for the nation's no. 2 cornerback, Josh Dobson, as well. As it began to look like the Aggies were about to close the deal with Meredith, however, Dobson began to be interested in places like LSU, who made a big move in his recruitment a couple of weeks back.
However, the Aggies didn't go away. Texas A&M is still a school to be reckoned with in the recruitment of Dobson, and as they look for how to close out this defensive back class with Meredith about to make an unfavorable decision, Dobson may be the key.
Mike Elko is becoming a pied piper of top-rated defensive backs, with three of Texas A&M's four current commitments being ranked as five-stars— safety Kamarui Dorsey, safety Jayquan Snell, and cornerback Raylaun Henry. Adding Dobson to this group would be enough to rocket them to all-time status without a doubt.
Texas A&M looks like they're poised for whatever the future brings. If Meredith ends up delaying his decision, it's good news for A&M— but if he ends up heading for Austin, then the Aggies can go all-in on Dobson, where they may just win out.
