Texas A&M fans know well that there was no bigger disaster in this previous football season than Bill Belichick’s inaugural season in Chapel Hill. There was nigh-unlimited hype surrounding the legendary Patriots head man making a move to the college ranks, but one very expensive, loss-riddled season later, the Heels are more of a laughing stock than a force to be reckoned with.
As you might expect, then, there are plenty of UNC players now jumping ship as a result, including former Aggies Max and Jake Johnson. In fact, the Aggies have just found themselves as a beneficiary of Belichick’s incompetence, as high-level defensive tackle and now-former Tar Heel CJ Mims has announced he is transferring to College Station.

Mims is the perfect way to cap off the Aggies’ defensive line class. He’s the third DT for the Aggies to snag out of the portal, joining Brandon Davis-Swain from Colorado and Angelo McCullom from Illinois. Along with DJ Hicks and the three rising freshmen— Landon Rink, DJ Sanders, and Chace Sims— this makes for a much better DT room in Aggieland than any had dared hope when looking forward to 2026.
The former Tar Heel is most likely going to be an instant starter for the Aggies in the upcoming year, as his experience and level of play will make him the proverbial plug and play candidate. He also helps fill the need the Aggies have for a one-technique tackle, where Hicks fills more of the three-technique role.
This most likely will conclude the Aggies’ portal efforts for this cycle, pending any unexpected entrants from other schools. Texas A&M has moved quickly and effectively to address their needs, demonstrating once again that Mike Elko is the consummate professional for this new era of college football.
