Texas A&M made a lot of big time moves in the transfer portal last season to bring in talent that addresses many of their needs after all of the departures from the 2025 team, but one that has somewhat flown under the radar is that of Tawfiq Byard, a safety out of Colorado.
Byard, the brother of Kevin Byard, currently of the Chicago Bears, was one of the best players for Deion Sanders last year, but Mike Elko was able to win out for his services in the portal over the Tennessee Volunteers in a huge win. Of course, while Byard is a great player, the question remains whether he can actually break through and make an impact on the field for the Aggies in the upcoming season— after all, safety is not like offensive line, where there is a clear and obvious need for a starter on A&M’s roster.
After watching Byard’s film and getting a feel for his game, the answer to that question seems like it’s a clear yes. The hard-hitting safety, originally from Maryland, will be the perfect chess piece for Lyle Hemphill and Mike Elko to use in their defense this upcoming year.
Tawfiq Byard is exactly what Mike Elko’s defense needs to excel in 2026
You only need to watch the spring game to understand just how high of an effort level Byard brings to this secondary. The former Colorado Buffalo was a bright spot on a defense last year that was far too full of holes— but he still managed to shine through nonetheless.
The one problem that is present is the depth in front of him at safety in College Station. The two incumbents are Dalton Brooks and Marcus Ratcliffe— both guys that have been in the starting lineup since Elko got to College Station, not to mention that they’ve both been voted as team captains.
That’s quite the bar to clear for a newcomer— two players who are not only quite experienced, but who are also well-respected in the locker room. However, the tape doesn’t lie: Byard’s skill set is one that will aid this team mightily this upcoming year— his physicality is impossible to deny, and when he triggers, it’s a sight to behold.
For however well Brooks and Ratcliffe play much of the time, one of the big issues in the run game last season was the safeties getting to the right fit in run defense. That looks like it’s Byard’s specialty, and so having him in there— especially with two extremely skilled cover corners like Dezz Ricks and Rickey Gibson (or Julio Humphrey… or Brandon Arrington) covering receivers downfield— could increase the effectiveness of this Aggie defense by leaps and bounds.
That’s not to mention just how fun it is for Aggie fans to watch a safety come up from the defensive backfield and lay the lumber on opposing ball carriers and receivers. Those clips of Justin Evans demolishing Derrick Henry in the ill-fated 2015 Alabama game at Kyle Field still get passed around every offseason, even despite how poorly that game turned out for Aggie fans.
Despite whatever hurdles are ahead of him, I think it will be extremely hard to keep Byard off of the field this upcoming year. Aggie fans can look forward to the new no. 4 in the defensive backfield making some highlight plays in the maroon and white for all of 2026– and, if we’re lucky, even into 2027.
