Regis, a fifth-year senior for the Aggies, is a huge part of the defensive line rotation on the interior of the line— literally and figuratively. That area in particular was where the Aggies knew they needed some guys to shine after losing a lot of talent to the draft, and Regis continues to deliver.
A former three-star talent out of La Porte, Texas, he came to College Station having played both defensive tackle and tight end in high school. He committed to the Ags in a surprise move, when most had expected he would end up at Texas.
This latest honor for the Aggies shows that Texas A&M isn't going anywhere when it comes to defensive line talent, as it marks the second-straight week that the Ags have received this distinction.
Texas A&M demonstrates their defensive line can be as dominant as ever as Albert Regis wins SEC DL of the week
After his three sacks in three plays last week, Cashius Howell received this same designation from the conference. Having two different players receive this award in two consecutive weeks, especially in a conference replete with so much talent at that position group, says a lot about what this Aggie team has up front.
This was a position group that many were concerned about coming into the season thanks to a perceived lack of depth. However, it's not just Regis and Howell that have showed out so far: DJ Hicks, the other defensive tackle starter for the Aggies, was the highest-graded A&M defender against Notre Dame, per Pro Football Focus.
If the Aggies can keep this level of play up, they should be set to blow lesser opponents out of the water going forward. Notre Dame was able to hit some key plays, and CJ Carr played really well, but not every A&M opponent will have the same threats at the skill positions that the Irish had. If this defense can round into form, the Aggies will be a threat for the playoff— or even more
