Texas A&M football’s 2027 class is too far above the pack by now for anyone in the nation to realistically catch, but there have been a few unfortunate decisions recently in the cycle for the Aggies. Texas A&M as of late has missed on a few big recruits— some anticipated, and some surprising— and a couple of those have been to their arch rivals, the Texas Longhorns.
Yet another decision has gone in that direction as of today, as five-star offensive tackle Ismael Camara has announced that he is committing to the Longhorns over the Aggies, the SMU Mustangs, the Oregon Ducks, and others. The big tackle from Gilmer, Texas, announced at the beginning of the summer that he would not be taking any of his scheduled official visits, so he never made it to Aggieland, but he showed up in Austin for an unofficial not long ago, giving a good indication of where this recruitment was going.
The Aggies, of course, already have two five-star offensive linemen in the class, but this marks the second-straight target of that caliber that they’ve missed on after Albert Simien committed to the Notre Dame Fighting Irish last week. It was always a bit of a pipe dream for the Aggies to end up with three-plus five-star linemen in this class, but this commitment all but shuts the door on that dream nonetheless.
Texas A&M loses out on Ismael Camara to Texas Longhorns in another 5-star miss
The Aggies got their five-star win at offensive linemen over the Longhorns earlier in the cycle when they picked up Kennedy Brown out of Kingwood, a player who has spent time as the top-ranked player in the entire nation. Add in Mark Matthews, the top tackle in the nation by most services, and you have a two-man group that will anchor the Aggie offensive front for years to come.
Camara is much less polished than either of those two guys, but he’s got all-star potential if he can put it all together. Texas is taking on a project in many ways, but if Kyle Flood— who’s on a bit of a hot seat after last year’s performance— is able to mold this ball of clay well, the Longhorns will be assured that the resources they’ve put into this recruitment will pay off.
There’s an obvious risk there, as well. Anything that might knock that development off course— injury, culture issues, etc.— could cause patience to run out with a quickness when you’ve put this much into a single player. Texas appears comfortable with taking that risk, however.
The Aggies now are awaiting the commitments of LB Mikhail Allen, scheduled for a week from today, and RB Landen Williams-Callis, both of whom will be picking between the Longhorns and Aggies. Texas A&M hopes to go two-for-two here, but they seem all but assured of getting at least one of these two players.
Unless a high-profile decommitment happens, though, these will be the final two battles between these two schools for the cycle. Aggie fans are hoping for a more positive note to end this battle on, but we’ll have to wait and see.
