The Buzz Williams era at Texas A&M basketball will be defined starting tonight

Texas A&M basketball has certainly enjoyed a lot of success, relatively speaking, over the last stretch of years. The Aggies have made deep runs in the SEC tournament, beaten their first-ever AP no. 1 and no. 2 teams, and more.

That's thanks to the man in charge, Buzz Williams. The Aggie coach has guided this program to some impressive heights, but there have also been some valleys.

Long stretches where the Aggies looked like they simply forgot how to play their game, spates of malaise in the middle part of the season, and other issues irked A&M faithful as idiosyncrasies of the head man.

No matter what happened, though, before this season, A&M fans have been waiting for a moment like this. A moment where an experienced, senior-laden team takes the court for one final season together, and hopefully a deeper run than anything else the program has ever seen.

Well, that season is now complete, and it would be ignorant to deny that it was a success. But regular-season accomplishments only mean so much: you can't fall on your face every single March if you want to be remembered well.

That's not to say that this team has fallen flat on their faces every single March, but the success simply has not been there the way that Aggie fans have hoped. This is the time, if ever, that Buzz needs to show up.

There's no more room to say that this group will make a run next year. Most of this core group will be gone in 2025-2026— and, if you believe the rumors, Buzz himself could be as well.

With all that in mind, now is the time for Buzz to define his legacy. This will either be a time where this tight-knit group leans on their seniority, skill, and love for one another to make something amazing happen in the tourney, or where they stumble once more in the face of huge odds.

It starts tonight against Yale, which already poses something of a roadblock for the Aggies. If A&M gets out of Denver, they'll have even more giants to face. It won't be easy— but leaving a great legacy never is.
