The Texas A&M Recruiting class of 2017 is headlined by quarterback Kellen Mond. Could he be the next great quarterback at Texas A&M?
The Texas A&M football program has been in desperate need for a quarterback that can solidify the offense since the transfers of Kyle Allen and Kyler Murray. Both transferred from the program at the conclusion of the 2015 season. Trevor Knight, a transfer from Oklahoma, filled in well. However, Knight is a graduate student, make this season his only year of eligibility at A&M.
Coach Kevin Sumlin might have just found his man. Kellen Mond, the 6’3″ dual-threat quarterback out of IMG Academy, gave his commitment to the Aggies on June 27. According to the 247sports.com composite ratings, Mond is the number three rated dual-threat in the nation. He is listed at 86th, cracking the top 100 overall.

Mond decommitted from Baylor on Jun. 1 following the firing of head coach Art Briles. That led many programs to ramp up their recruiting efforts. Auburn and A&M emerged as the front runners that most impressed him.
The crystal ball predictions favored Auburn 79 percent to A&M’s 16 percent. Nevertheless, after talking with his family, Mond seized the opportunity to become the next big name for A&M.
In his senior year at IMG, Mond has thrown for 1,946 yards with 20 touchdowns and only three interceptions. He added 775 yards rushing, averaging a little over five yards every attempt, along with 18 touchdowns on the ground.
How Does He Fit at Texas A&M?
Mond’s precision as a passer and his ability to tuck it and run should fit very well into offensive coordinator Noel Mazzone’s offense. With Knight gone next year, Mond will be competing with soon-to-be senior, Jake Hubenak and Nick Starkel. The Aggies flipped Starkel from Oklahoma State in their 2016 class. Lying in the weeds is Conner Blumrick, the only other quarterback currently committed in their 2017 class. Blumrick shows amazing arm strength and shouldn’t be slept on for the quarterback battle that is going to take place.

Mond was recently bumped up to a five star recruit and the number one overall dual-threat quarterback for the 2017 class as a whole by Rivals.com. Mond has the potential to become an immediate impact player as a true freshman. He’ll be coming into an Aggie offense with many weapons at the receiver and running back positions for him to work with.
