The Infield

Joel Davis

An outfielder last year, Davis will slide to first base for the 2017 season. Don’t be surprised to see the Oklahoma native appear in the middle of the batting order this year.

Davis hit .246 last season in 20 appearances and 17 starts. He had a couple big hits for the Aggies’ last season including a two-run triple in Texas A&M’s regional victory over Minnesota.

Austin Homan

Homan reminds me a lot of former Aggie infielder Blake Allemand. The guy just oozes grit and toughness and finds a way to make an impact on the game.

Last year it was presumed that freshman George Janca would win the starting job at shortstop. When Janca struggled, it was Homan that seized the job for good. He rolled through SEC play, hitting .301 with a .359 on base percentage. Homan led the team in errors (9), but he always found a way to make up for them during the next half inning with a key hit or well placed ball.

The Rest of the Vets

George Janca and Cole Bedford make up the remainder of returning Aggies that saw playing time last season.

Bedford was the Ags reserve catcher last season and save action in six contests. His .000 average in nine at bats in SEC play has nowhere to go but in 2017. He was prized more so for his defense, where he posted a perfect 1.000 fielding percentage in conference play, and a .991 fielding percentage for the season in 21 appearances.

Janca drew 16 of his 24 starts prior to conference play kicking off due to the emergence of Homan. He’ll be in the mix for a starting infield position this season and will improve on his freshman slash line of .231/.294/.269.

It’s not secret that the Aggies are losing a lot of proven production this year. That’s going to open up room for some new faces to prove themselves. The Aggies have plenty talented freshman chomping at the bit to see game action on Olsen Field. Ultimately, it’s these five seniors that will likely show just how far this team can go.
