Game No. 21: Sunday, March 19

Kentucky defeats Texas A&M 11-7

It seemed like no matter who the Aggies put on the mound Sunday afternoon, Kentucky was going to hit. Mitchell Kilkenny, Kaylor Chaffin and Turner Larkins combined to give up 11 runs on 16 hits as a valiant late effort by the Aggie offense fell short.

Kentucky jumped out a to 2-0 lead off a 2 RBI double by Riley Mahan in the 1st inning. Cole Bedford’s single scored Nick Choruby in the bottom half to stem the flow, but then the flood gates opened. Kentucky would pour on nine unanswered runs over the course of the next six innings.

Texas A&M was able to mount a rally in the 7th inning behind an RBI Single from Nick Choruby and a 2 RBI Single from Brandon Shewmake. George Janca then had a nice moment in the 8th inning with his first Whammy of the year with a three run shot to left field. But it was too little, too late for Texas A&M as Kentucky swept the Aggies at Olsen Field.

Final Thoughts

This weekend was a great reminder that Texas A&M is a young baseball team. Texas A&M is a good baseball team. However, it has yet to be determined if this team has what it takes to be a great baseball team. Yes, this was the first SEC Series of a still young season, but the road does not get any easier from here. The Aggies visit both Vanderbilt and LSU over the next two weekends.

I said from the beginning of the season that this team will go as far as the bullpen allows it and Saturday was a great reminder of that. A lot of freshman have stepped up big time to start the year such as Logan Foster and Brandon Shewmake. But it’s a great concern when the Aggie seniors are 5-55 at the plate since the Texas game.

This team is still coming together and will move past this rough opening to SEC Play. They’ll get their first opportunity to bounce back Tuesday against Rice.
