After winning their first two games in the Houston Regional the Texas A&M Baseball team has more than just a regional win on the line this Sunday.

If you went to bed at a reasonable hour on Saturday you might have missed the wild finish between Texas A&M and Iowa in the winners bracket of the Houston Regional.  After the dust settled it was the Aggies who found themselves on top. How important was that victory? Coach Rob Childress brought Kaylor Chafin in to close out the game after he’d already thrown three and a third innings on Friday night. View the full replay here.

Now the stage is set for a magical run. Iowa will meet host Houston in an elimination game on Sunday

afternoon

evening. The winner of that contest will move on to face the Aggies

tonight

Monday. Texas A&M needs one win in two tries to clinch their third consecutive regional victory.

The stakes keep getting higher

The 4-Seed Davidson Wildcats upset No. 2 National Seed North Carolina Tarheels in the Chapel Hill Regional on Friday. On Saturday the Wildcats won again, sending 2-Seed Florida Gulf Coast to the losers bracket. They beat the ‘Heels again on Sunday night to earn a trip to the Super Regionals.

Teams that start 2-0 in a regional go on to win that regional 82 percent of the time. With the Aggies and the Wildcats both sitting at 2-0 that makes the most likely scenario for next weekend interesting. According to NCAA rules if a National Seed is eliminated the highest seed that does advance will host the Super Regional. If the two seeds are the same the host will be chosen by the NCAA. That doesn’t matter now for the Aggies because Davidson is a 4-seed, Texas A&M is a 3-seed

In a nutshell: If both Texas A&M and Davidson win today (or tomorrow) the Aggies will be hosting a Super Regional. Two wins against the Wildcats would then separate the maroon and white from a trip to the College World Series.
